Book review: Distant waters, by Valentine Atkinson

Distant Waters - coverValentine Atkinson is a world-acclaimed flyfishing photographer, whose spectacular eye-catching pictures have been published in numerous magazines and books for the last 20 years. I had often stumbled upon his photographs, but never on one of his books. His first book was published in 1997 already, but it wasn’t until 2009 that I got a hand on it.

Distant Waters is a great fly-fishing destinations teaser for the travelling angler I am, and it should be for y ou too! Val has managed to put together his magnificent photos from his fly-angling travels, together with short novellas about the different areas visited and presented. Valentine AtkinsonLast but not least, those short essays are authored by famous poets of the fly, such as Thomas McGuane, Nick Lyons or Russell Chatham.

Destinations such as the Kola Peninsula, Iceland, New Zealand, or Christmas Island are depicted in this large-format book. As I told you, more than enough to stimulate anyone’s travel urges during those too long winter night reading sessions!

I am running to the bookstore in order to buy his latest book, Friends on the Water (2009). I’ll let you know how it is!
